Olive groves

The care of the olive groves

The cultivation of olive trees in Val d’Orcia dates back to the times of the ancient Etruscans, when olive oil was a tradition well rooted in the population because it allowed the preservation of food.

On the lands of Valdorcia Terre Senesi typical Tuscan olive trees of the Leccino, Frantoio, Moraiolo and Olivastra varieties are cultivated at an altitude of 400-700 meters above sea level in the municipalities of Castel del Piano, Seggiano and Castiglione d’Orcia.

The mineral-rich soils and the optimal climate ensure that the plant grows luxuriantly and that there are no attacks of parasites.

The care of the olive groves is what the farmers have always done for centuries: regular pruning to air the plants: elimination of suckers and suckers, maintenance of the grass under the foliage and use only organic products.
